Introducing JMCxSSC

Soft-Spun Creations is thrilled to announce our collaboration with the incredible artist Jennifer Monet Cowley!

Jennifer, a Dallas-based artist, has been painting and drawing since the age of five. Her artwork is rich in color and symbolism, reflecting both vibrant hues and meticulous craftsmanship in each piece.

When we thought of a fellow creator who matched our energy, Jennifer was the obvious choice. Her bold style and unique, one-of-a-kind elements make her creations truly stand out. If you haven’t heard of a #Jennyoutfit, you better ask somebody!

Introducing The Movement—a collection of hats inspired by hip-hop emcees, the high-energy exchanges between our creator and Jennifer on the dance floor, and the spirit of hip-hop culture. Featuring vibrant colors and eye-catching metallics, each hat radiates main character energy.

This exclusive collection features hand-spun, 100% cotton crocheted hats. Every piece is unique and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

FAQs with co-creator, Milagro Baines:

What was the inspiration behind #TheMovement?
When creating this line, I knew I wanted to merge two of my favorite things: crochet and contemporary art. I also wanted the collection to exude high energy, and to me, nothing embodies that more than vibrant colors and music, especially hip-hop. The energy behind this line was also fueled by the sheer vibe Jennifer and I share whenever we're on the dance floor together. It’s like there’s music playing in our heads 24/7.

Can you tell us more about these funky names?
I often say, “Make it crochet, but make it hip-hop.” To highlight the influence of this style of music, we knew we had to have some fun with the names. We’ve included shoutouts to some of the dopest female emcees in the game right now, like Doechii with “Alligator Bites” and Megan Thee Stallion with “Hiss.” We also have references to our favorite songs, like “Shawty” by Plies, and coined cultural phrases like “Rent Free.” The names had to be fun and reflect the vibe of the collection.

What makes this hat so unique?
This may be the first time I've seen paint used in crochet like this. The color blends Jennifer creates through her process are mesmerizing and truly one-of-a-kind. It’s an effect you can’t achieve with variegated yarns. Another cool feature of these hats is their reversibility; by flipping the hat inside out, you get a completely different, more muted, almost pastel color palette. It’s a beautiful transformation that adds versatility to each piece.

What do you want people to walk away with about this line?
I want people to see the care that has gone into each and every hat. Each one is a unique art piece. I also want people to put on one of our hats and instantly feel joy—a smile that makes them want to move. Often, when I go out to dance spots, I see people just holding up the wall. I want them to leave that wall behind and feel free to release their wiggle, while rocking one of our crowns.
